19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Altered Images
Ess

This image is part of a close-up study (made in 2020) of the natural art found in the seaside bluffs of San Diego’s Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. The goal was to create a set of images that portrayed scenes in and around the bluffs as clearly as possible, with nearly all elements in focus. In the days of Group f/64, view cameras and lenses utilizing exceptionally narrow apertures were tools used to create clarity and depth of focus that exceeded the capabilities of the human eye. Today, software tools can used for a similar purpose, and this was the intention behind this image.
