14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Explorers, Batter McIntosh, Egmont Key, Florida
These image was taken on a road trip to photograph the coast of Florida. Egmont Key, and island off the coast of St. Petersburg, was once a fort and includes several historic batteries for gun emplacements. While the picture without the children was interesting, I felt that adding more to scene enhanced its mystery. I scouted the island and found these boys exploring the old concrete structures and included them in the picture, which was shot on a large format 8x10 film camera.
