Factory Ship - Wrecked whaling factory ship in the Antarctic Circle

We were cruising a small island bay in zodiacs in the Antarctic Circle, when we came upon the wreck of an old whaling factory ship, that processed the kills while others did the hunting. The story is that this ship had just filled is storage completely after two years at sea. They were to set sail for home the next day and decided to have a celebratory party. During the festivities a lantern was knocked over, and a fire started which they couldn't put out. In order to save the crew, the captain ran the ship aground, and they were able to abandon the ship with no loss of live. They later returned home safety, but without the bounty for two years of labor. The wreck remains a reminder of a past era and way of life.
