23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Wildlife
Fagus Sylvatica

'Fagus Sylvatica' is one image from my series entitled, "Morphology." Each leaf is photographed using the macro photography techniques of focus stacking and photo merging to create these large scale, highly magnified portraits of leaves. 'Morphology' is the study of the form, structure and arrangement of an organism's parts. This body of work is motivated by and explores a long-standing fascination Andy has had with floral illustration and how art has profoundly shaped our relationship with nature by acting as a historical record, a tool for education, and a means of fostering empathy and connection. Throughout history, art has both reflected our changing views of nature and actively influenced them, transforming it from a perceived adversary to a subject of awe and a critical concern for our collective well-being. By using the very latest digital photographic methods, Andy has brought us closer than ever before to reveal the beauty of this microscopic natural world.
