18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World

Before I set out the the Serengeti I had a few images in my mind that I was going to try to capture. One of those images was a silhouette of some giraffes, but for that to happen we needed a lot of different things to come together. After many days of not being able to find giraffes or the sun, or landscape didn't line up I had almost given up hope. It wasn't until the last sunset where we got a call about a group of giraffes close to camp crossing a field. We quickly rushed over there! The sun was setting fast so we needed to work quick. We got out in front of the giraffes and shot this on a telephoto. We had to quickly reposition ourselves as the giraffes kept coming towards the vehicle for some reason! We shot until there was no light! I was absolutely ecstatic that a shot I had envisioned had actually come to fruition and turned out much better than expected! Just goes to show that it's not over till its over!
