A mountain lion cub watches over his mom in the light snow while she feasts on an elk carcass. I took this photo from a blind in the subzero temperatures of a Wyoming winter. The night was entirely silent except for the sound of wind and snow. When the motion-detected lights turned on, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. A mother lion, her head gently dipped to the cached carcass, while a young cub stalked out of the shadows. He carefully regarded a herd of deer passing under the blind and down the canyon. The cats were so still, the lights turned back off and they melted back into the darkness.
