23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Wildlife
Rhythm of the Wind
When I got up before dawn and drove to Musiara marsh in Maasai Mara, Kenya, I found a thick layer of morning mist covering the land. As I drove along a well-worn track, I saw a small family of elephants quietly emerging from the mist, lashing the air with their trunks, ears blowing like delicate petals, their flanks rippling, the close-knit family moving in easy, swinging strides. As the elephants moved steadily in a front toward me, the babies oblivious to my presence, the adults keeping a keen eye on me, all I had to do to execute this photograph of a contented family in harmony with the world, is wait for the best arrangement of the happy-go-lucky figures freshly formed.
