Gil is an 11-year-old living on a rural farm in northern Minnesota. He comes from a large, hardworking family who are cattle farmers. Gil's relationship with animals is beautiful and also very honest. This calf is a twin to one of the cows owned by the family. Gil named him Matthew and will bottle feed and care for him until he is grown and then sold for beef. He knows the cow will eventually be slaughtered but he will care deeply for him until that day comes. This is the first day Gil was with Matthew in Gil's chicken coup just after bottle feeding him for the first time.
