12th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Travel

It is summer and this farmer plows the field so he and his family can plant root crops. Seen at the background is his son and wife while planting ginger. Ginger production is one of the major crops raised in this remote village in the northern part of the Philippines. It will take 4-6 months before it is harvested and be ready for sale.
