20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Female Bornean Orangutan and Baby

It was my first day in Borneo, and I had asked the guide if we could go to the Orangutan reserve both morning and afternoon (to make sure I got good Orangutan photos). After the morning session, I had some decent photos, but they all had ropes or other manmade objects in them. I was joking with guide on the way back for the afternoon session, that it would be really good to see Orangutans in the forest. When we arrived at the parking area, there was a female with a baby. No other tourists saw them, but I said to the guide that we should just stay in the parking lot. We slowly moved closer, without disturbing the pair. We stayed with them for almost an hour, until the rain started and they left.
