20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Fern in broken glass

On an afternoon walk through the woods in Maryland, I came across a very old, fairly large trash pile full of glass, toys, household goods, and all sorts of materials. At first, I was saddened by what I saw, but when I looked a bit closer, I noticed that nature was slowly reclaiming the area. Moss and plants grew in, over, and around almost everything. Small terrariums were thriving in the discarded and broken bottles. The treads and skeletons of shoes were claimed for planters. Even rusted iron provided a place for small plants to find footing and thrive.
