According to many, the fire-spinning ritual of the people of Shishvan symbolizes the burning of Imam Hussein’s (peace be upon him) tents on the night of Ashura. In this ceremony, a large main torch is lit in the center of the square, in front of the village’s Grand Mosque, so that people gather around it. The mourners, similar to when they pass beneath the ‘Alam,’ go one by one under this torch, followed by two others—one carrying a bucket of water and the other sprinkling water from the bucket onto the fire torch to cool it down. After the main torch is placed in the center, smaller torches belonging to other neighborhoods are brought from the front of the local mosque to the main square by the mourners. They light these smaller torches with the flame of the main torch, holding them with long chains, and then rotate them above the heads of the participants.
