18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Just a Typical Afternoon
This photo was taken on September 9th, 2020 on a rare day in San Francisco when the sky was orange all day long due to the surrounding California wildfires. This phenomenon only lasted for one day. The air quality on this day was moderate and appeared worse than it seemed. This was because the marine layer was shielding the smoke up high in the air. Once the marine layer lifted, San Francisco experienced hazardous air quality for at least a week. This photo is of Ocean Beach around noon PST and showcases surfers and beach goers enjoying the day as if it was a normal, typical day.
