17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
First Poppy

This was the first poppy of the season. The plant had been so desperate to find the early spring sun that it grew a long spindly stalk that couldn't stand upright. Instead, it collapsed on the porch floor where the flower rested and opened, unfazed by its circumstances.
