First Presbyterian Church, Antonito, Colorado

The First Presbyterian Church of Antonito, Colorado, is located at the southern boundary of Protestant Colorado and the northern extremity of Catholic Latin America. Spanish and English, names and languages, intermingle here. It seems as a consequence that the lines of this church are especially straight and severe like an ideal subject for Walker Evans. It makes a cultural as well as religious statement at the boundary of two worlds. Its steeple draws the eye heavenward and thus the perspective of the photograph.
