17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Fish Eye

As the salmon finish their 100 mile trip up river to spawn, they sit and wait for higher water in order to finish their trip to their final destination. As Alaskans we are continuously tracking the annual salmon run each summer and the total escapement to their spawning grounds. It is important that the salmon return is healthy every year because our culture, economy, and well being all revolve around the salmon. We watch over them in order to protect them from ourselves, especially with controversial projects such as Pebble Mine. I did my best to represent this with my photo.
