In popular believe Mauritania is a desert country but surprisingly, this Western African country has some of the most abundant fishing grounds in Africa. Traditional fishing is carried out by local men, who push their pirogues into the sea, with 5 to 10 men in each boat. The daily routine starts with an early morning prayer, followed by singing and pushing of the boats into the sea. Being invited onto one of their fishing adventures, I took a photo of a young boy, lighting an open fire aboard a pirogue to prepare the early morning tea, while his brother lights a tobacco pipe as they head for the fishing nets. This sort of fishing is incredibly dangerous. Men, indeed whole boats, are frequently lost at sea and never seen again.
