Flaming torches

Nachi no Ogi Matsuri (Nachi Fan Festival) organized by Kumano Nachi Taisha (Shinto shrine located near the Nachi falls) is one of the three major fire festivals in Japan. And the festival is held to pray for an abundant harvest. I photographed the ceremony “Takimoto shinji” (the ignition to the big torches), to purify the approaches to the shrine with the torch that weighs more than 50kg and welcome the Ogi mikoshi (fan-shaped portable shrine).
