14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Sustainable Travel
Flamingo in Galapagos

In 2015 I traveled to the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. The photo is one of many taken during this visit. There I met director Arturo Izurieta of the Charles Darwin Research Station. Hearing the Research Station's need to both connect with the local community and to raise funds for supporting research activities I volunteered to design an Exhibition Hall using an empty building onsite. January of 2016, the designs secured donations for exhibits. Back to Galapagos in February 2016 for installation, plus painting a 25 foot wide mural depicting the marine life of the Galapagos. Opening on June 7, 2016, followed with 40, 000 visitors, including local school children. The Charles Darwin Exhibition Hall is the catalyst for involving local community with the Research Station and a source of revenue for research leading conservation action in the islands. I couldn't feel happier. My continued goal is to help link local communities with their environment through education and understanding, leading to sustainability for both.
