14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Sustainable Travel
Fledgling aspens in flaming orange are dwarfed by burned out skeletons from the 2001 Colorado Hayman Fire.
I lived through the horrific Hayman Fire and our family was evacuated twice from our home near the burn area. Fifteen years later this hillside shows the promise of rebirth as the aspen trees and sporadic new ponderosa growth sprout from the naturally fertilized ground. A poignant scene of nature's resilient sustainability.
