20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World

It all began a couple years ago with a beaver who decided to make the Eco center and Swaner preserve home. Over the past year a family of beavers come in and transformed what was a drying stream and a dying wet land into a thriving one. We have been living here for 5 years and this spring season is by far the most animal and bird diverse we have seen! This bring me to the Flicker’s a bird that is both striking in photos as well as being quite a character in flight. Who grabbed our attention as he began jack hammering away our aluminum top chimney for the 1st time this season. At the time we thought it was some construction going on as I don’t keep track of what is going on in our HOA. Sarah my wife ran outside to see what the commotion was. Brett get out here right away. Still in my bath robe I quicky put some boots on and ran out the slider door. Wow... it a bird it’s a plane its supper man.... naa it’s a bird. And what a gorgeous bird it is. For weeks after that 1st encounter, I was determined to get some good pics. 99% of the pic where one bird. However, this day there were two chasing each other at top speed. The Nikon I have was ready to go as usual. These two males seem to battle it out for the oldest story ever told... a girl they both liked.
