22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Flor-de-São-Miguel

The picture shows the flowering vine purple wreath (Petrea volubilis), known in Brazil as Flor-de-São-João, native to tropical America. It has lilac flowers, and in the back of the photo it's possible to see some red Flamboyant flowers. They bloom at the end of winter and beginning of spring, and can grow to 39 ft as a climbing plant.
