22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Fly agaric

The photo shows the fly agaric, one of the most famous species of fungi belonging to the agaric family. It's characterized by a bright red cap studded with white bumps - the remnants of a blanket that protects the mushroom at a young age. Fly agaric contains toxic compounds, which makes it dangerous to eat. However, this mushroom is also known in cultural traditions and folklore, often associated with magical and mystical themes. In the natural environment, fly agarics form mycorrhizal bonds with the roots of coniferous and deciduous trees, playing an important role in forest ecosystems. The photo was taken in autumn on the territory of the protected reserve in Belarus - Vydritsa
