23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Wildlife
Follow the yellow brick road, Target Rock National Wildlife Refuge.
Or at least, follow the yellow flower road. The picture was taken on the beach looking north, with the seaside Goldenrod wildflowers in full bloom. Target Rock, which is 3 miles east of Caumsett State Park, is on the eastern side of Lloyd Neck. The Refuge gets its name from the large rock that British warships in Huntington Bay used for target practice during the War of 1812 (according to material posted there). Other sites say the Revolutionary War. The rock, not visible in the picture, is on the other side of the point of land, further down the beach.
