Follow Your Own Path

As a caregiver for an elderly parent, my stress level was heightened on the day I admitted my parent into a skilled nursing facility. My heart was heavy, and I was feeling anxious and not in control of the situation...basically feeling helpless. So prior to sunset, I went to the local beach to walk alongside the ocean waves as a means of centering myself and releasing the anxiety of the day. As I looked down at the sand at my feet, I noticed a mosaic of designs organically created by random footprint impressions. The footprints were endless and spanned across the vast beach. The sight of footprints going in multiple directions, yet co-existing beautifully on the sandy canvas, led me to reflect on how we all should follow our own path and that there's no right or wrong path. It reinforced my need to own the current situation (no matter how dark, complex and ambiguous) and know in my heart that my decisions about my parent's health care going forward would work out, no matter what. I learned in that moment to follow my own path in life. One of the footprint patterns right before me was in the shape of a heart. So follow my heart, follow my own path.
