23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
For your Eyes Only

Masan has truly transformed into one of Varanasi’s most vibrant and unifying festivals. Every year, more people from different parts of the city gather to participate in this unique Holi procession, filling the streets with color, music, and energy. The festival is not just about celebration—it’s a showcase of local talent and tradition that brings together communities like never before. During this year’s festivities, I witnessed a street performance that perfectly captured the spirit of Masan. Among the crowd was a young boy whose festival performance was nothing short of mesmerizing. His eyes were absolutely terrific—filled with intensity and emotion that drew everyone’s attention. In that moment, I couldn’t resist taking a shot to capture his powerful presence. The Masan festival is more than an event; it’s an experience where every face tells a story, and every performer adds to the magic. If you’ve never been part of it, witnessing such raw passion—like in the boy’s eyes during his performance—is reason enough to join next year’s celebration.
