13th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Forest sunlight
This is an unusual phenomenon. At just after dawn in mid-autumn, the sun appears over the mountains at the right angle to light this part of the forest. On this occasion there were clouds just above the sun's angle, so only the tree trunks were lit, offering a naturally 'magic' effect.
