15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Forever Landscape

This is the Palouse---an area on the borders of eastern Washington state and Idaho----an area of farmland, on of the breadbaskets of America. Crops are planted here to take advantage of the undulating land, looking like waves on the ocean. When the late summers harvest is abundant the waves take on the golden hue as in this photograph. Barley and lentils are the main crop in late summer and the late evening sun turns them into a blaze of gold and yellow.
