19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Formation

Dolphins sometimes swim in formation. The herd we encountered that day was generally uniform in speed, and they were swimming slowly. Even when I photographed them from close range, they formed a formation at a reasonable distance to the back. They know that we humans cannot swim as well as they can. No matter how close we get, they don't panic and swim away with a relaxed expression on their faces.
