14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Former laboratory testing subject (Beagle)

Pictured is a Beagle bred and sold as a puppy to an undisclosed company to be used as a testing subject in their labs. At two months old, the inside of his ear was tattooed with the serial code CCTE9Y, which was his name for the next four and a half years. When he was released from the facility, a family in Northern California adopted him and gave him the name Wade. "He was the shyest dog out of all the (testing) beagles they had for adoption. The first time we took him outside he cried and shook like a leaf. He couldn't even move. He was so scared of the world at first."
