Former Pennsylvania Railroad Broad Way, Cassandra PA 2018-07-01
The Pennsylvania Railroad built its main line across the Allegheny Mountains in the 1850s and upgraded it radically at the end of the century, creating the "Broad Way" -- a four-track main line that carried heavier traffic than almost any in the world, especially during World War 2. Just west of the world-famous Horseshoe Curve, on the "West Slope" of the mountains, Jamestown Road crosses over the right-of-way (reduced to three main tracks by Conrail in the 1980s; the fourth one here, to the right, serves as a lead to a siding serving a coal-mining operation along the railroad's original curvy alignment through the area); this photo looks east from the road bridge.
