Fort Donelson Civil War Cemetery

This photo was taken of a Civil War cemetery at Fort Donelson, in Tennessee. My husband and I were visiting this historic location, when I captured this shot. In 1862 Congress passed legislation that allowed the United States President the authority to buy land for the established cemeteries (National Park Service). This legislation started the national cemetery system (National Park Service). In 1863, the Union Army abandoned the Confederate works and created a fortification on ground, which became the cemetery site (National Park Service). There was a Freedman’s community around the Union fort. It was four years later, when the same site was selected to establish the National Cemetery and 670 Union soldiers were reinterred at the location (National Park Service). The photo was captured, while a storm was moving in, over the cemetery.
