16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Altered Images
Forward and Back
This photo is a piece from the image series I created entitled "The Evolution of an American Woman." It portrays a woman living in the 1920s, highlighting the conflicting freedoms and oppressions women faced during this decade, an era of sexual liberty and sexual restraint, prohibition and alcohol, beauty-freedom and beauty standards. It seems that every step the Women's Rights Movement takes forward, there is often a step taken back institutionally.
