23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Travel
Freedom

We had traveled with my family to a small village in northern Iran. At that time, I was photographing the unique moods of adolescence. As we entered the village, I noticed a few young boys holding pigeons and chatting excitedly. I realized they were about to let them fly. I quickly jumped out of the car and ran after them. They laughed, surprised to see a woman chasing them with a camera. I asked if I could photograph the moment they released the pigeons. They agreed—but before I could even adjust my camera, one of them suddenly let his pigeon go. I barely had time to lift the camera, yet one single frame was captured—and when I later looked at it, I thought: what a moment.
