15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Freedom's Ring

The true uniqueness of this image was the result of a fortunate accident. I was driving my car in a westerly direction, toward the afternoon sun. The brilliant sun was casting light rays in several directions. I only had my iPhone with me, but I knew I had to take a photo of it. As I waited in the left turn lane at a stoplight, I held my phone out the driver's window, and snapped this shot. When I later viewed the image, I was initially disappointed by the dome-shaped lens/lighting anomaly that appeared. But, I noticed that there were dark specks, three inside, and one outside, the dome-shaped flare. When I zoomed in, I saw that these were fighter jets from nearby Nellis Air Force base flying maneuvers, which I couldn't see in the bright light of the moment.
