23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Wildlife
French Sky Ace

On the cliffs of Rémuzat, in southern France, the griffon vulture has made a remarkable return since its reintroduction in 1996. Now a fully protected species, these giants of the sky soar freely over the valley once again. I climbed the cliffs to photograph them in their element, waiting for the right moment as they circled overhead. This particular vulture, curious and confident, turned toward me in mid-flight before banking sharply to its left. It was priviledge to witness of a species that almost disappeared from this landscape.
