16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Fried Pork

I used to shoot first and ask permission later given my fear of losing a moment, negatively influencing a scene, or being rejected. This picture was taken as one of the first in an ongoing series where I set out to face my fears and only snap after receiving permission. Penang was the perfect place to start this series. Getting a yes here surprisingly easy. It took days of walking the streets before I could get a no. What I found was that while people often pose after I asked permission, more often than not, they would pose in such a way that enhanced the scene in a way I had never considered.
