14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Altered Images
From the Series "I AM GATOR", No. 10

Number 10 is special. Phenomenally special, as it turns out. I'm fairly certain I will never forget when I saw him through the zoom lens. This shot was unexpected, and when I saw him up close, as strange as it may sound to some, I nearly cried. This alligator is stunningly beautiful. I could see his coloration and eyes, and was floored. And I could see that the natural light playing with the effect of the water made an incredible backdrop. It looks as if I put him on a black background. I did not. It looks as if I had to enhance him. I did not. I'm absolutely floored and thrilled to have been present for this moment. Animals can absolutely, NATURALLY, look like you "photoshopped" them. This gator proved that today. While I certainly enjoy my artistic technology tools for photography, this gator today said "Move over Photoshop; I don't need you." American alligator in the Hillsborough River, Florida.
