Ft. Pulaski, Georgia
At the beginning of the Civil War, this strategic southern fort guarding the approaches to Savannah was occupied by Confederate forces. When the Union Navy showed up to capture it in 1862, the fort was attacked by rifled cannon in use for the first time, and the fort surrendered 30 hours later. From that point on, all brick fortifications everywhere were rendered obsolete.
