GAP Bike Trail: Former Railroad Bridge Crossing River

This is one of the many former railroad bridges converted to bike trail bridges on this 150 mile cycle route from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Maryland. This photo is with my son, 15, sitting on our tandem bike as we are crossing this bridge. This trail is one of the best examples of rails to trails in the U.S. I have biked in Europe the last 25 years, written two books on cycle touring, multiple articles, and think this is the best trail I have seen in the U.S. We were going to ride in Europe summer 2021, but with COVID, we looked for a ride closer to home, and loved this ride! An example of how COVID gave us the inspiration to explore the wonders closer to home, from our base in Falls Church, VA
