15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Gates of the Mountains, Montana

On a boat tour of the Missouri River near Helena, Montana. Meriwether Lewis named this site Gates of the Mountains while he journeyed up it during the Lewis and Clark expedition on the 1800s because the large stone cliffs seemed to block the waterway at each bend of the river until it opened like gates.
