22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Geisha

There are just too many things one needs to pay attention when looking at a geisha closeup - the immaculate makeup, the elaborate hair, the perfectly arranged clothing layers, the exquisite kimono and so many others. For me what was the most impressive was the subtle makeup gradient from the eyebrows to the top of the nose and the subtle colour around the eyebrows. But what brought all of this together was Masaki's incredible elegance as she slowly turned her head and tilted it perfectly against the light.
