19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Gentoo Penguin

Being on the Antarctic mainland is a feeling that is hard to explain. Despite having seen so many nature documentaries and read so many polar books, the actual experience was so much more immersive, awe-inspiring and grander than what I was hoping for. Penguins are specially adapted for thriving in a place where very few can survive. Our expedition guides allowed us plenty of time on this and other landings. This helped me to try and create a variety of images.
