Ghost Crabs

Ghost crabs size each other up on the pristine white sands of the beach. I originally set out to photograph frigatebirds as they swooped in to pirate fish from returning gannets, but instead, I stumbled upon an even more captivating subject. As dusk settled, hundreds of these elusive crabs—creatures that spend most of the day hidden in their burrows—emerged en masse, scuttling across the shoreline to feast on tiny organic debris washed ashore by the tide. Their peculiar body structure and periscope-like eyes made it difficult to interpret their interactions. However, they largely coexisted in harmony, rarely engaging with one another. When they did, their encounters were fleeting, a quick flurry of movement before returning to their quiet scavenging.
