Golden Poppy Arcata Marsh

A Golden Poppy aka a California Poppy missing a petal and showing off it's inner stem along a trail at the Arcata Wastewater Treatment Plant and Wildlife Sanctuary. The Arcata Marsh is an innovative wastewater treatment plant is an example of a community's involvement in environmental politics, innovative uses of land, and applications of appropriate technology in a small urban community. By integrating conventional wastewater treatment with the natural processes of constructed wetlands, Arcata has succeeded in turning wastewater into a resource. It is over 300 acres and home to more than 315 birds along with skunks, river otters and a variety of wildflowers.
