21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Grandala

We can call it a Nature's Opera, when thousands of birds descend to their treetop roost, the beating of their iridescent wings creates such a rush of sound that the noise earned the phenomenon its unusual name: The murmuration of Birds. Scientists believe that murmurations offer safety in numbers; protection from predators like eagles, harriers and falcons that are attracted by the sheer number of birds. After all, it can’t be easy to single out just one bird from a whirling group of hundreds or even thousands! Experts still aren’t completely sure how each bird knows which way to turn without bumping into the others.
