Green water below snowy peaks

Lakes in the high Sierra Nevada mountains have always appeared pristine and have provided drinking water for wildlife and backpackers. More recently, as a result of warming temperatures and the impacts from forest fire, many high elevation lakes are at risk of developing harmful algal blooms. Algal species found in these lakes can produce neurotoxins lethal to humans and wildlife. The bright green water in this lake contrasts with the pristine snowcapped peaks in the distance.
