22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Greenbottle fly tasting rattlesnake blood on newspaper.

I'm a herpetologist and I found a beautiful northern Pacific rattlesnake that had been killed on the highway. I collected it to make a study skin for educational purposes. As I was skinning it, several greenbottle flies were attracted to the blood on the newspaper I had spread out on the table. I took some macro shots and only later did my wife notice the subject matter of the newspaper printing. This photo was taken in July, 2023, before the escalation of the Middle East conflict.
