I spent a day on Bonaventure Island this spring. It is definitely one of the most amazing places I've ever seen. Tens of thousands of Northern Gannets have claimed the island, sharing it (stingily) with some cormorants, razorbills and gulls. The Gannets colony is impressive. So many birds are resting there, feeding, flirting and flying, mating and making nests. They are as gracious as they are clumsy, as serious as they are funny. (Have you seen a gannet taking off?) Their blue eyes are mesmerizing but the noise they make is anything but harmonious. Nonetheless, I could have spent days on the island, just being there and observing those loud mouths.
