The Gule Wamkulu in Chichewa means the big dance. It is the traditional dance of the Chewa tribe (Central and Southern Malawi). Preformed by all male anonymous dancers who swear to secrecy, it is believed that these dancers act as surrogates for spirits which possess their bodies for the dance. These men create their own costumes out of whatever they can find. There are many types of spirits, each with unique mannerisms and dance styles. This dancer was on stilts moving in ways so fluid that he looked sureal.
